The Bahariya Oasis is located about 360 km from Cairo and has about 30,000 inhabitants. They are very hospitable and traditionally Islamic. The largest village in the Oasis is Bawiti (named after the first tribal chief/mayor of the community). When you walk through the streets of Bawiti, it seems as if time has stood still here for a long time. Many men still travel to work by donkey, and women mainly live indoors where they take care of the household and children. But of course, people here are also developing, children go to school, and although computers are still scarce, almost everyone now has a mobile phone.
Due to its location, Bahariya is a perfect place to start your journey into the Sahara. But there is also plenty to see and experience in Bahariya itself. You can take beautiful walks through the date palm fields, take a dip in one of the iron-rich hot springs, where warm water comes up from great depths (up to 800 meters deep).
Or you can visit the old part of the village, the pyramid mountain, the salt lake, and English Mountain during a local tour.
In 1996, an estimated 2000 mummies were discovered. The valley itself is not yet open to visitors, but some of the mummies can be admired in the local museum. You can also visit three underground burial tombs, including that of Amenhotep Huy, which is decorated with extremely refined decorations and wall paintings of life here in the 18th dynasty.
